Counterexample

Kalman's conjecture concerns systems of the form x˙=Px+q f(e),e=rTx.\dot x = P x + q\, f(e), \qquad e = r^{T} x. Here x∈ℝnx \in \R^n, PP is a constant real n×nn \times n matrix, and q,r∈ℝnq, r \in \R^n are constant vectors. The function f ⁣:ℝ→ℝf \colon \R \to \R is differentiable with f(0)=0f(0) = 0. Assume that k1<f′(e)<k2k_1 < f'(e) < k_2 for all ee, and that for every k∈(k1,k2)k \in (k_1, k_2) the linear system x˙=(P+k qrT)x\dot x = (P + k\, q r^{T}) x is asymptotically stable. The conjecture claims that then the equilibrium x=0x = 0 attracts every solution.

The claim is false in general. For n≤3n \le 3 it is true. But for some n>3n > 3 there are PP, qq, rr and ff that satisfy all the hypotheses, while the system has a non-constant periodic orbit. A solution on that orbit does not tend to 00, so 00 is not a global attractor.

Remarks

Kalman stated the problem in 1957. In the counterexamples constructed by Leonov, Kuznetsov and coauthors, the periodic orbit is stable and coexists with the stable equilibrium at 00. Its basin of attraction does not touch a small neighbourhood of the equilibrium, so it is a hidden oscillation: simulation from initial points near 00 does not reveal it. Once a counterexample exists in dimension nn, adding decoupled coordinates with w˙=−w\dot w = -w gives one in every larger dimension. For the discrete-time analogue the conjecture holds only for n=1n = 1.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • edge refutes or not_instance_of out (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
