Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be an -module. The module is faithfully flat if both conditions hold:
- is flat.
- For every -module , if , then .
Remarks
The following are equivalent for an -module :
- is faithfully flat.
- A sequence of -modules is exact if and only if is exact.
- is flat and for every maximal ideal of .
Example: a nonzero free module is faithfully flat. It is flat, and , which is zero only when , since is not empty.
Non-example: is a flat -module, so clause 1 holds. But while , since ; so clause 2 fails.
