Definition

Let kk be a field and let XX be a smooth projective variety over kk with canonical bundle ωX\omega_X. The variety XX is a Fano variety if the anticanonical bundle ωX−1\omega_X^{-1} is ample.

Remarks

In divisor notation, XX is Fano when −KX-K_X is ample. Example: on ℙn\mathbb{P}^n one has ω=𝒪(−n−1)\omega = \mathcal{O}(-n-1), so ω−1=𝒪(n+1)\omega^{-1} = \mathcal{O}(n+1) is ample and ℙn\mathbb{P}^n is Fano. More generally, a smooth hypersurface X⊂ℙnX \subset \mathbb{P}^n of degree d≥1d \ge 1, with n≥2n \ge 2, has ωX=𝒪X(d−n−1)\omega_X = \mathcal{O}_X(d - n - 1) by the adjunction formula, so it is Fano exactly when d≤nd \le n. Non-example: a smooth plane cubic curve has ω=𝒪(3−3)=𝒪\omega = \mathcal{O}(3 - 3) = \mathcal{O}, and the trivial bundle on a curve is not ample. Many authors also allow mild singularities, such as terminal or log terminal ones, and then ask that −KX-K_X be an ample ℚ\Q-Cartier divisor. Over ℂ\C, smooth Fano varieties are simply connected and rationally connected, and in each dimension they form finitely many deformation families.
