Fekete's lemma
Builds on Real sequenceInfimumLimit of a sequence
Statement
Let be a real sequence that is subadditive, that is, for all integers . Then the limit of as exists in , and where is the infimum.
Remarks
Fix and write each as with integers and . Subadditivity gives , so . As the last term tends to and tends to , so . Taking the infimum over gives , which proves the claim. The limit can be : the sequence is subadditive, since , and . A typical use: if and for all , then is subadditive, so converges to . For a bounded linear operator on a Banach space with no power equal to , this applies to . The same lemma is often called the subadditivity lemma.

For a student
The lemma turns a crude inequality into the existence of a growth rate, without any formula for the terms. It is used to define constants such as the connective constant of self-avoiding walks, entropies, and the spectral radius . Kingman's subadditive ergodic theorem is a random version of the same idea. For a superadditive sequence, with , apply the lemma to : then tends to .
