Definition
Let , and be schemes, and let and be morphisms of schemes. A fiber product of and over is a scheme with morphisms and such that:
- .
- For every scheme and morphisms and with , there is a unique morphism with and .
The fiber product exists for all such data and is unique up to unique isomorphism. It is written ; it is the pullback in the category of schemes.
Remarks
Example: for ring maps and , the fiber product of and over is . The projections come from and , and clause 2 follows from the universal property of the tensor product of algebras. Non-example: the underlying set of is in general not the fiber product of the underlying sets. For instance, has two points, while the set product has one. When , one writes for .
