Field trace

Summary

Let L/KL/K be a finite extension and let α∈L\alpha \in L. Multiplication by α\alpha is a KK-linear map of LL, and the field trace TrL/K(α)\mathrm{Tr}_{L/K}(\alpha) is its trace. It is a KK-linear map L→KL \to K. For a separable extension it is the sum of the images of α\alpha under all embeddings of LL into an algebraic closure. The trace gives the trace form and the discriminant of an extension. The trace map is not identically zero exactly when the extension is separable.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
