Field norm

Summary

Let L/KL/K be a finite extension and let α∈L\alpha \in L. Multiplication by α\alpha is a KK-linear map of LL, and the field norm NL/K(α)N_{L/K}(\alpha) is its determinant. It is a multiplicative map L→KL \to K, and it is nonzero exactly on the nonzero elements. For a separable extension it is the product of the images of α\alpha under all embeddings of LL into an algebraic closure. Norms measure the size of algebraic numbers, detect units in rings of integers, and appear in Hilbert's Theorem 90.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
