Definition

Let L/KL/K be a finite extension and let α∈L\alpha \in L. Let mα ⁣:L→Lm_\alpha \colon L \to L be the map x↦αxx \mapsto \alpha x; it is a KK-linear map of the finite-dimensional KK-vector space LL. The norm of α\alpha from LL to KK is NL/K(α)=det⁡(mα)∈KN_{L/K}(\alpha) = \det(m_\alpha) \in K, the determinant of mαm_\alpha.

Remarks

The norm is multiplicative: NL/K(αβ)=NL/K(α)NL/K(β)N_{L/K}(\alpha\beta) = N_{L/K}(\alpha) N_{L/K}(\beta), and NL/K(c)=c[L:K]N_{L/K}(c) = c^{[L:K]} for c∈Kc \in K. It is transitive in towers: NM/K=NL/K∘NM/LN_{M/K} = N_{L/K} \circ N_{M/L}. If the minimal polynomial of α\alpha over KK is xd+ad−1xd−1+⋯+a0x^d + a_{d-1}x^{d-1} + \cdots + a_0, then NL/K(α)=((−1)da0)[L:K(α)]N_{L/K}(\alpha) = \left((-1)^d a_0\right)^{[L:K(\alpha)]}. If L/KL/K is separable and σ1,…,σn\sigma_1, \ldots, \sigma_n are the embeddings of LL over KK into an algebraic closure, then NL/K(α)=σ1(α)⋯σn(α)N_{L/K}(\alpha) = \sigma_1(\alpha) \cdots \sigma_n(\alpha).

Example: L=ℚ(i)L = \Q(i), K=ℚK = \Q and α=a+bi\alpha = a + bi with a,b∈ℚa, b \in \Q. Check: in the basis 1,i1, i, the map mαm_\alpha sends 1↦a+bi1 \mapsto a + bi and i↦−b+aii \mapsto -b + ai, so its matrix is (a−bba)\begin{pmatrix} a & -b \\ b & a \end{pmatrix} and N(α)=a2+b2N(\alpha) = a^2 + b^2.

Non-example: the complex absolute value a+bi↦a2+b2a + bi \mapsto \sqrt{a^2 + b^2} is not the norm of ℚ(i)/ℚ\Q(i)/\Q, since it does not take values in ℚ\Q; for example ∣1+i∣=2\abs{1 + i} = \sqrt{2}.
