Linear independence

Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a vector space over FF. A family (v1,…,vk)(v_1, \dots, v_k) of vectors of VV is linearly independent when the only linear combination of them that equals 00 is the trivial one. This means that a1v1+⋯+akvk=0  ⟹  a1=⋯=ak=0a_1 v_1 + \cdots + a_k v_k = 0 \implies a_1 = \cdots = a_k = 0 for all a1,…,ak∈Fa_1, \dots, a_k \in F. An arbitrary family (vi)i∈I(v_i)_{i \in I} is linearly independent when each finite subfamily is linearly independent. A family that is not linearly independent is linearly dependent.

Remarks

The vectors (1,0)(1, 0) and (1,1)(1, 1) in R2\R^2 are linearly independent; the vectors (1,2)(1, 2) and (2,4)(2, 4) are linearly dependent. A family that contains the zero vector, or the same vector twice, is linearly dependent. A family of at least two vectors is linearly dependent if and only if one of its vectors is a linear combination of the others. In FnF^n, a family of more than nn vectors is linearly dependent.

Explanations

L1 human

Vectors are linearly independent when none of them is redundant. No vector can be built from the others, so each one adds a new direction. Two arrows in the plane are independent exactly when they do not lie on one line.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

What depends on this

74 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
