definition

Linear map of a matrix

Definition

Let FF be a field, and let VV and WW be vector spaces over FF with bases B=(b1,…,bn)B = (b_1, \dots, b_n) and C=(c1,…,cm)C = (c_1, \dots, c_m). Let A=(aij)A = (a_{ij}) be an m×nm \times n matrix over FF. The linear map of AA in the bases BB and CC is the linear map TA ⁣:V→WT_A \colon V \to W with TA(bj)=∑i=1maijci(1≤j≤n).T_A(b_j) = \sum_{i=1}^{m} a_{ij} c_i \qquad (1 \le j \le n).

Remarks

The map A↦TAA \mapsto T_A is the inverse of the map T↦[T]C,BT \mapsto [T]_{C,B} of the matrix of a linear map. For V=FnV = F^n and W=FmW = F^m with the standard bases, TAT_A is the map x↦Axx \mapsto Ax, see multiplication by a matrix as a linear map. In Mathlib, this map is Matrix.toLin.

Explanations

L1 human

A matrix and two bases together define a linear map. Column jj tells us where the map sends basis vector jj. This undoes the step from a linear map to its matrix.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 11 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
