statement proposition

An orthonormal family is linearly independent

Statement

Let VV be an inner product space over R\R or C\C. Then each orthonormal family in VV is linearly independent.

Remarks

If ∑iaiei=0\sum_i a_i e_i = 0, then the inner product with eje_j gives aj=0a_j = 0. More generally, a family of nonzero pairwise orthogonal vectors is linearly independent. So an orthonormal family in an nn-dimensional space has at most nn vectors.

Explanations

Vectors at right angles cannot be combinations of each other. To find the coefficient of eje_j in a combination, take the inner product with eje_j. If the combination is zero, then every coefficient is zero.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
