Orthogonal vectors

Definition

Let VV be an inner product space over R\R or C\C. Two vectors x,y∈Vx, y \in V are orthogonal, written x⊥yx \perp y, when ⟨x,y⟩=0\langle x, y \rangle = 0, where ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\langle \cdot, \cdot \rangle is the inner product.

Remarks

The relation is symmetric, because ⟨y,x⟩=⟨x,y⟩‾\langle y, x \rangle = \overline{\langle x, y \rangle}. The zero vector is orthogonal to every vector, and it is the only vector orthogonal to itself. In R2\R^2 with the dot product, (1,2)(1, 2) and (−2,1)(-2, 1) are orthogonal.

Explanations

L1 human

Orthogonal is the general word for perpendicular. Two vectors are orthogonal when their inner product is zero. In the plane and in space, this means that they meet at a right angle.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
