statement theorem
Principal axis theorem
Statement
Let be a real symmetric matrix, and let for . Then there are an orthogonal matrix and real numbers such that, for , The numbers are the eigenvalues of , and the columns of are orthonormal eigenvectors of .
Remarks
It follows from the spectral theorem with diagonal. The lines spanned by the columns of are the principal axes of . For example, has the eigenvalues and , so it becomes . So the curve is an ellipse, with semi-axes and .
Explanations
L1 human
Each real quadratic form becomes a sum of squares after a rotation of the axes, possibly with a reflection. The new axes are the principal axes of the form. This is how we find the shape of an ellipse or a hyperbola from its equation.
