definition

Hermitian matrix

Definition

Let A=(aij)A = (a_{ij}) be an n×nn \times n complex square matrix. The matrix AA is Hermitian when A∗=AA^* = A, where A∗A^* is the conjugate transpose of AA. Equivalently, aij=aji‾a_{ij} = \overline{a_{ji}} for all ii and jj.

Remarks

The diagonal entries of a Hermitian matrix are real. A real matrix is Hermitian if and only if it is symmetric. The eigenvalues of a Hermitian matrix are real, and Cn\C^n has an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors, by the spectral theorem for Hermitian matrices. The matrix (21−i1+i3)\begin{pmatrix} 2 & 1 - i \\ 1 + i & 3 \end{pmatrix} is Hermitian.

Explanations

L1 human

A Hermitian matrix is the complex version of a symmetric matrix. The entry across the diagonal is the complex conjugate of the entry here. In quantum mechanics, observable quantities are Hermitian matrices or operators.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
