Singular value decomposition

Statement

Let AA be an m×nm \times n complex matrix. Then there are a unitary matrix UU of size m×mm \times m, a unitary matrix VV of size n×nn \times n, and an m×nm \times n matrix Σ\Sigma with A=UΣV∗.A = U \Sigma V^*. Here Σij=0\Sigma_{ij} = 0 for i≠ji \ne j, and Σ11≥Σ22≥⋯≥0\Sigma_{11} \ge \Sigma_{22} \ge \cdots \ge 0 are the singular values of AA.

Remarks

If AA is real, then UU and VV can be chosen real orthogonal. The columns of VV are eigenvectors of A∗AA^* A, and the columns of UU are eigenvectors of AA∗A A^*. The matrix Σ\Sigma is unique; UU and VV are not unique in general. Keeping the kk largest singular values gives the best approximation of AA of rank kk, for the Frobenius and operator norms.

Explanations

L1 human

Every matrix is a rotation, then a stretch along the axes, then another rotation. The stretch factors are the singular values. This decomposition is a central tool in data analysis and numerical computation.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 15 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
