Positive definite matrix

Definition

Let AA be an n×nn \times n complex Hermitian matrix. The matrix AA is positive definite when x∗Ax>0for all x∈Cn with x≠0.x^* A x > 0 \qquad \text{for all } x \in \C^n \text{ with } x \ne 0. A real symmetric matrix AA is positive definite when xTAx>0x^T A x > 0 for all x∈Rnx \in \R^n with x≠0x \ne 0.

Remarks

For a Hermitian AA, the number x∗Axx^* A x is always real. The identity matrix and (2−1−12)\begin{pmatrix} 2 & -1 \\ -1 & 2 \end{pmatrix} are positive definite. AA is positive definite if and only if all its eigenvalues are positive. AA is positive definite if and only if ⟨x,y⟩=y∗Ax\langle x, y \rangle = y^* A x is an inner product on Cn\C^n.

Explanations

L1 human

A positive definite matrix gives a positive number xTAxx^T A x for every nonzero vector xx. Such matrices behave like positive numbers in many ways: they have square roots and positive determinants. They appear as Hessians at minima and as covariance matrices.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
