Symmetric matrix
Definition
Let be a ring and let be an square matrix over . The matrix is symmetric when , where is the transpose of . Equivalently, for all and .
Remarks
The matrix is symmetric. For each matrix over a commutative ring, and are symmetric. A real symmetric matrix has real eigenvalues and an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors, by the spectral theorem. Symmetric matrices represent symmetric bilinear forms in a basis.
Explanations
L1 human
A symmetric matrix looks the same after we flip it over its main diagonal. The entry in row , column equals the entry in row , column . Distance tables between cities are symmetric, because the distance from to equals the distance from to .
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
