Inner product space

Definition

Let K\mathbb{K} be R\R or C\C. An inner product space over K\mathbb{K} is a vector space VV over K\mathbb{K} together with an inner product ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\langle \cdot, \cdot \rangle on VV.

Remarks

A finite-dimensional real inner product space is a Euclidean space. Each inner product space has the induced norm ∥x∥=⟨x,x⟩\norm{x} = \sqrt{\langle x, x \rangle}. An inner product space that is complete for this norm is a Hilbert space. Each finite-dimensional inner product space is complete.

Explanations

L1 human

An inner product space is a vector space where we can measure lengths and angles. The space Rn\R^n with the dot product is the main example. Much of plane geometry, such as the Pythagorean theorem, works in every inner product space.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

20 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
