statement proposition

Parallelogram law

Statement

Let VV be an inner product space over R\R or C\C, with the induced norm ∥⋅∥\norm{\cdot}. Then, for all x,y∈Vx, y \in V, ∥x+y∥2+∥x−y∥2=2∥x∥2+2∥y∥2.\norm{x + y}^2 + \norm{x - y}^2 = 2 \norm{x}^2 + 2 \norm{y}^2.

Remarks

The proof expands both squares with the inner product; the mixed terms cancel. By the Jordan–von Neumann theorem, a norm comes from an inner product if and only if it satisfies this law. The norm ∣x1∣+∣x2∣\abs{x_1} + \abs{x_2} on R2\R^2 fails it for x=(1,0)x = (1, 0) and y=(0,1)y = (0, 1), so it comes from no inner product.

Explanations

L1 human

In a parallelogram, the squares of the two diagonals add up to the squares of the four sides. The vectors x+yx + y and x−yx - y are the diagonals of the parallelogram with sides xx and yy. In a rectangle, both diagonals have the same length, and this is the Pythagorean theorem twice.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
