Quadratic form

Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a finite-dimensional vector space over FF. A quadratic form on VV is a map Q ⁣:V→FQ \colon V \to F such that:

  1. Q(av)=a2Q(v)Q(av) = a^2 Q(v) for all a∈Fa \in F and v∈Vv \in V.
  2. The map (u,v)↦Q(u+v)−Q(u)−Q(v)(u, v) \mapsto Q(u + v) - Q(u) - Q(v) is a bilinear form on VV.

Remarks

On FnF^n, the quadratic forms are the maps Q(x)=∑i,jaijxixjQ(x) = \sum_{i,j} a_{ij} x_i x_j, that is, homogeneous polynomials of degree 22. In matrix notation, Q(x)=xTAxQ(x) = x^T A x for an n×nn \times n matrix AA. If the characteristic of FF is not 22, the matrix AA can be chosen symmetric, and then it is unique. For example, Q(x,y)=x2+3xy+2y2Q(x, y) = x^2 + 3xy + 2y^2 is a quadratic form on R2\R^2.

Explanations

L1 human

A quadratic form is a polynomial in which every term has degree two, such as x2−4xy+y2x^2 - 4xy + y^2. It is the simplest kind of function after linear functions. The squared length x12+⋯+xn2x_1^2 + \cdots + x_n^2 is the main example.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
