Polar form of a quadratic form

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV be a finite-dimensional vector space over FF, and let QQ be a quadratic form on VV. The polar form of QQ is the map BQ ⁣:V×V→FB_Q \colon V \times V \to F with BQ(u,v)=Q(u+v)−Q(u)−Q(v).B_Q(u, v) = Q(u + v) - Q(u) - Q(v).

Remarks

BQB_Q is a symmetric bilinear form, and BQ(v,v)=2Q(v)B_Q(v, v) = 2 Q(v) for all vv. For Q(x)=xTAxQ(x) = x^T A x on FnF^n, BQ(x,y)=xT(A+AT)yB_Q(x, y) = x^T (A + A^T) y. Many authors divide by 22 when the characteristic is not 22, so that the result BB satisfies B(v,v)=Q(v)B(v, v) = Q(v); see the associated form. This construction is the degree 22 case of the polarisation of homogeneous polynomials.

Explanations

L1 human

The polar form recovers a bilinear form from a quadratic form. For Q(x)=x2Q(x) = x^2 on R\R, the polar form is (x+y)2−x2−y2=2xy(x + y)^2 - x^2 - y^2 = 2xy. It is the algebraic form of the polarisation identity for inner products.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
