Symmetric bilinear form

Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a vector space over FF. A bilinear form BB on VV is symmetric when B(u,v)=B(v,u)for all u,v∈V.B(u, v) = B(v, u) \qquad \text{for all } u, v \in V.

Remarks

In each basis, BB is symmetric if and only if its matrix is a symmetric matrix. The dot product on Rn\R^n is symmetric. If the characteristic of FF is not 22, symmetric bilinear forms correspond one to one with quadratic forms.

Explanations

L1 human

A symmetric bilinear form gives the same value for (u,v)(u, v) and for (v,u)(v, u). Inner products on real spaces are the main examples. Their matrices are symmetric.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
