Orthogonal complement

Definition

Let VV be an inner product space over R\R or C\C, and let WW be a subspace of VV. The orthogonal complement of WW is W⊥={v∈V:⟨v,w⟩=0 for all w∈W}.W^\perp = \{v \in V : \langle v, w \rangle = 0 \text{ for all } w \in W\}.

Remarks

W⊥W^\perp is a subspace of VV, and W∩W⊥=0W \cap W^\perp = 0. In R3\R^3 with the dot product, the orthogonal complement of a plane through 00 is its normal line. For a real m×nm \times n matrix AA, the null space of AA is the orthogonal complement of the row space of AA in Rn\R^n. In finite dimensions, V=W⊕W⊥V = W \oplus W^\perp, see the orthogonal decomposition.

Explanations

L1 human

The orthogonal complement collects all vectors that are perpendicular to a subspace. The complement of a line in R3\R^3 is a plane, and the complement of a plane is a line. A subspace and its complement together fill the space.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
