statement corollary

Dimension of the orthogonal complement

Statement

Let VV be a finite-dimensional inner product space over R\R or C\C, and let WW be a subspace of VV. Then dim⁡W+dim⁡W⊥=dim⁡V,\dim W + \dim W^\perp = \dim V, where W⊥W^\perp is the orthogonal complement of WW.

Remarks

It follows from V=W⊕W⊥V = W \oplus W^\perp. For example, in R3\R^3, a line has a plane as orthogonal complement: 1+2=31 + 2 = 3. For a real matrix, it gives rank⁡A+dim⁡ker⁡A=n\rank A + \dim \ker A = n once more, because ker⁡A\ker A is the orthogonal complement of the row space.

Explanations

L1 human

A subspace and its orthogonal complement share the dimensions of the space. If WW uses kk directions, then W⊥W^\perp uses the remaining n−kn - k directions.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 13 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
