statement theorem

Row rank equals column rank

Statement

Let FF be a field and let AA be an m×nm \times n matrix over FF. Then the dimension of the row space of AA equals the dimension of the column space of AA. Equivalently, rank⁡AT=rank⁡A\rank A^T = \rank A, where ATA^T is the transpose.

Remarks

One proof uses row reduction: row operations keep the row space and the dimension of the column space. In reduced row echelon form, both dimensions equal the number of pivots. Another proof uses the annihilator: the dual map has the transposed matrix and the same rank. Over C\C, also rank⁡A∗=rank⁡A\rank A^* = \rank A.

Explanations

L1 human

The number of independent rows of a matrix always equals the number of independent columns. This is surprising, because rows and columns live in different spaces. For a 3×53 \times 5 matrix, it shows at once that the rank is at most 33.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 15 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
