Column space

Definition

Let FF be a field and let AA be an m×nm \times n matrix over FF with columns a1,…,an∈Fma_1, \dots, a_n \in F^m. The column space of AA is Col⁡(A)=span⁡(a1,…,an)⊆Fm,\operatorname{Col}(A) = \operatorname{span}(a_1, \dots, a_n) \subseteq F^m, the linear span of the columns.

Remarks

The column space is {Ax:x∈Fn}\{Ax : x \in F^n\}, the image of the map x↦Axx \mapsto Ax. The system Ax=bAx = b is consistent if and only if b∈Col⁡(A)b \in \operatorname{Col}(A). The dimension of the column space is the rank of AA. The pivot columns of AA form a basis of Col⁡(A)\operatorname{Col}(A).

Explanations

L1 human

The column space collects all the combinations of the columns of a matrix. These are exactly the vectors bb for which Ax=bAx = b has a solution. For the matrix (1224)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 2 & 4 \end{pmatrix}, the column space is the line spanned by (1,2)(1, 2).

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
