Geometric multiplicity
Definition
Let be a field, let be a finite-dimensional vector space over , and let be a linear map. Let be an eigenvalue of . The geometric multiplicity of is , the dimension of the eigenspace .
Remarks
It is the maximal number of linearly independent eigenvectors for . It satisfies , where is the algebraic multiplicity of . For , the eigenvalue has geometric multiplicity and algebraic multiplicity . A matrix is diagonalisable if and only if splits and the two multiplicities agree for each eigenvalue.
Explanations
L1 human
The geometric multiplicity counts the independent directions that the map stretches by . It can be smaller than the algebraic multiplicity. When it is smaller, the matrix cannot be diagonalised.
