Eigenspace

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV be a vector space over FF, let T ⁣:V→VT \colon V \to V be an endomorphism, and let λ∈F\lambda \in F. The eigenspace of TT for λ\lambda is Eλ=ker⁡(T−λid⁡V)={v∈V:T(v)=λv}.E_\lambda = \ker(T - \lambda \id_V) = \{v \in V : T(v) = \lambda v\}.

Remarks

The eigenspace is a subspace of VV; it is the kernel of a linear map. Its nonzero elements are the eigenvectors of TT for λ\lambda. Eλ≠0E_\lambda \ne 0 if and only if λ\lambda is an eigenvalue of TT. The dimension of EλE_\lambda is the geometric multiplicity of λ\lambda.

Explanations

L1 human

The eigenspace collects all the vectors that the map stretches by the same factor λ\lambda, with the zero vector. These vectors form a subspace, for example a line or a plane. On this subspace, the map acts as multiplication by λ\lambda.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
