statement theorem

Basis of a tensor product

Statement

Let FF be a field, and let VV and WW be vector spaces over FF. Let (ei)i∈I(e_i)_{i \in I} be a basis of VV and let (fj)j∈J(f_j)_{j \in J} be a basis of WW. Then the family (ei⊗fj)(i,j)∈I×J(e_i \otimes f_j)_{(i, j) \in I \times J} is a basis of the tensor product V⊗WV \otimes W.

Remarks

So each vector of V⊗WV \otimes W is uniquely ∑i,jcij ei⊗fj\sum_{i,j} c_{ij}\, e_i \otimes f_j with only finitely many nonzero cij∈Fc_{ij} \in F. For v=∑iaieiv = \sum_i a_i e_i and w=∑jbjfjw = \sum_j b_j f_j, v⊗w=∑i,jaibj ei⊗fjv \otimes w = \sum_{i,j} a_i b_j\, e_i \otimes f_j. Thus the coefficients of a vector v⊗wv \otimes w form a matrix of rank at most 11.

Explanations

L1 human

From a basis of each factor, we get a basis of the tensor product. Its vectors are all the products of a basis vector of VV and a basis vector of WW. A vector of V⊗WV \otimes W is like a matrix of coefficients.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
