Tensor product of vector spaces
Definition
Let be a field, and let and be vector spaces over . Let be the vector space over with basis the set ; write for the basis vector of . Let be the subspace of spanned by all elements of these forms, for , and : The tensor product of and is the quotient space . For and , the class of is written .
Remarks
The map is bilinear, and the vectors span . Not every vector of is of the form ; for example, in is not. The tensor product is characterised by its universal property. For finite-dimensional spaces, is isomorphic to the space of linear maps from to .
Explanations
L1 human
The tensor product combines two vector spaces into one space of formal products . These products follow the rules of bilinearity and nothing more. It turns bilinear maps into linear maps, which are easier to study.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
