Exterior algebra
Definition
Let be a field and let be a vector space over . Let be the tensor algebra of , where and the product is the tensor product. Let be the two-sided ideal of generated by the elements for . The exterior algebra of is the quotient algebra . The product in is written .
Remarks
For all , and . The image of is the -th exterior power ; if , then and . If is a basis of , then is spanned by . For , .

The exterior algebra multiplies vectors with the wedge product, which changes sign when we swap two factors. In , describes an oriented parallelogram, and an oriented volume. The top wedge product of vectors gives the determinant.
