Statement

  1. Let L/KL/K be a finite cyclic extension and let σ\sigma be a generator of its Galois group. An element α∈L\alpha \in L has norm NL/K(α)=1N_{L/K}(\alpha) = 1 if and only if α=β/σ(β)\alpha = \beta / \sigma(\beta) for some β∈L×\beta \in L^\times.
  2. Let L/KL/K be a finite Galois extension with Galois group GG. Let f ⁣:G→L×f \colon G \to L^\times be a map with f(στ)=f(σ) σ(f(τ))f(\sigma\tau) = f(\sigma)\, \sigma(f(\tau)) for all σ,τ∈G\sigma, \tau \in G. Then there is β∈L×\beta \in L^\times with f(σ)=β/σ(β)f(\sigma) = \beta / \sigma(\beta) for all σ∈G\sigma \in G. In the language of group cohomology, H1(G,L×)=1H^1(G, L^\times) = 1.

Remarks

For part 2, Dedekind's lemma gives γ∈L\gamma \in L such that β=∑τ∈Gf(τ) τ(γ)\beta = \sum_{\tau \in G} f(\tau)\, \tau(\gamma) is nonzero. Then σ(β)=∑τσ(f(τ)) στ(γ)=f(σ)−1∑τf(στ) στ(γ)=f(σ)−1β\sigma(\beta) = \sum_\tau \sigma(f(\tau))\, \sigma\tau(\gamma) = f(\sigma)^{-1} \sum_\tau f(\sigma\tau)\, \sigma\tau(\gamma) = f(\sigma)^{-1} \beta. For part 1, if N(α)=1N(\alpha) = 1 then f(σi)=α σ(α)⋯σi−1(α)f(\sigma^i) = \alpha\, \sigma(\alpha) \cdots \sigma^{i-1}(\alpha) is well defined on the cyclic group and satisfies the condition of part 2; conversely N(β/σ(β))=N(β)/N(σ(β))=1N(\beta / \sigma(\beta)) = N(\beta)/N(\sigma(\beta)) = 1.

Example: take L=ℚ(i)L = \Q(i) and K=ℚK = \Q, with σ\sigma complex conjugation. The elements of norm 11 are the a+bia + bi with a2+b2=1a^2 + b^2 = 1, and the theorem writes each as (m+ni)/(m−ni)=(m2−n2+2mni)/(m2+n2)(m + ni)/(m - ni) = (m^2 - n^2 + 2mni)/(m^2 + n^2) with integers m,nm, n not both zero. This recovers the parametrization of rational points on the unit circle and of Pythagorean triples.

Part 1 needs a generator σ\sigma of the Galois group, so it applies only to cyclic extensions; for a general finite Galois extension one uses part 2.

Going deeper

For a student

The cohomological form H1(Gal⁡(L/K),L×)=1H^1(\Gal(L/K), L^\times) = 1 is the starting point of Galois cohomology. It is the main step in Kummer theory. When KK contains a primitive nn-th root of unity, it shows that every cyclic extension of degree nn is obtained by adjoining an nn-th root. There is also an additive version: in a cyclic extension, the elements of trace 00 are exactly the β−σ(β)\beta - \sigma(\beta), which gives Artin–Schreier theory in characteristic pp.
