Dedekind's lemma on independence of characters

Builds on Group homomorphismGroup of units of a ringLinear independenceField homomorphism

Statement

Let GG be a group and let LL be a field, with multiplicative group of units L×L^\times. Let χ1,…,χn ⁣:G→L×\chi_1, \ldots, \chi_n \colon G \to L^\times be pairwise distinct group homomorphisms. Then χ1,…,χn\chi_1, \ldots, \chi_n are linearly independent over LL as functions G→LG \to L: if a1,…,an∈La_1, \ldots, a_n \in L and a1χ1(g)+⋯+anχn(g)=0a_1 \chi_1(g) + \cdots + a_n \chi_n(g) = 0 for all g∈Gg \in G, then a1=⋯=an=0a_1 = \cdots = a_n = 0.

Remarks

Suppose there is a nontrivial relation, and take one ∑aiχi=0\sum a_i \chi_i = 0 with the fewest nonzero coefficients; then at least two coefficients, say a1a_1 and a2a_2, are nonzero. Choose h∈Gh \in G with χ1(h)≠χ2(h)\chi_1(h) \ne \chi_2(h). Evaluating the relation at hghg and subtracting χ1(h)\chi_1(h) times the relation at gg gives ∑iai(χi(h)−χ1(h))χi=0\sum_i a_i (\chi_i(h) - \chi_1(h)) \chi_i = 0. This relation has fewer nonzero coefficients but a nonzero coefficient at χ2\chi_2, a contradiction.

The main application concerns field homomorphisms. If σ1,…,σn ⁣:K→L\sigma_1, \ldots, \sigma_n \colon K \to L are distinct field homomorphisms, their restrictions to the group K×K^\times are distinct characters, so σ1,…,σn\sigma_1, \ldots, \sigma_n are linearly independent over LL. For example, the identity and complex conjugation on ℂ\C are independent over ℂ\C: if az+bzˉ=0a z + b \bar z = 0 for all zz, then z=1z = 1 gives a+b=0a + b = 0 and z=iz = i gives a−b=0a - b = 0, so a=b=0a = b = 0.

The same proof works when GG is only a monoid and the χi\chi_i are monoid homomorphisms into L×L^\times.

For a student

In Galois theory the lemma is used to show that a finite extension L/KL/K has at most [L:K][L:K] automorphisms over KK. It is the key step in the proofs of Artin's theorem on fixed fields, of Hilbert's Theorem 90 and of the normal basis theorem. It also shows that the field trace of a finite separable extension is not identically zero.
