Artin's theorem on fixed fields
Builds on Fixed fieldAutomorphism groupDegree of a field extensionGalois extensionGalois groupPrimitive element theorem
Statement
Let be a field and let be a finite subgroup of the automorphism group of . Let be the fixed field of . Then:
- the degree equals the order ;
- is a Galois extension;
- the Galois group equals .
Remarks
For , let be the distinct elements of the orbit . The polynomial is fixed by , so it has coefficients in ; it is separable and splits in . Hence every element of is separable over of degree at most , and is normal and separable. By the primitive element theorem, every finite subextension of is then generated by one element, so it has degree at most . Hence . Conversely, and give the reverse inequality. Another proof uses Dedekind's lemma on independence of characters.
Example: let and let with . The fixed field is , and indeed .
The hypothesis that is finite is necessary. The automorphism of with generates an infinite group whose fixed field is , and is not even algebraic.

For a student
This theorem is one half of the fundamental theorem of Galois theory. It shows that every subgroup of a finite Galois group is the Galois group of over the fixed field , so the map is injective. It also produces Galois extensions directly: the symmetric group acting on shows that is Galois over the field of symmetric rational functions with group .
