Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1 be an integer and let KK be a field that contains a primitive nn-th root of unity ζ\zeta. Let L/KL/K be a cyclic extension of degree nn, and let σ\sigma be a generator of its Galois group. For α∈L\alpha \in L, the Lagrange resolvent of α\alpha with respect to ζ\zeta is (ζ,α)=∑i=0n−1ζiσi(α)=α+ζσ(α)+⋯+ζn−1σn−1(α).(\zeta, \alpha) = \sum_{i=0}^{n-1} \zeta^i \sigma^i(\alpha) = \alpha + \zeta \sigma(\alpha) + \cdots + \zeta^{n-1} \sigma^{n-1}(\alpha).

Remarks

Since σ\sigma fixes ζ\zeta and σn=id⁡\sigma^n = \id, one has σ((ζ,α))=∑iζiσi+1(α)=ζ−1(ζ,α)\sigma((\zeta, \alpha)) = \sum_{i} \zeta^i \sigma^{i+1}(\alpha) = \zeta^{-1} (\zeta, \alpha). Hence (ζ,α)n(\zeta, \alpha)^n is fixed by σ\sigma and lies in KK. By the independence of characters applied to the automorphisms id⁡,σ,…,σn−1\id, \sigma, \ldots, \sigma^{n-1}, some α\alpha has (ζ,α)≠0(\zeta, \alpha) \ne 0. For such α\alpha, the automorphism σj\sigma^j multiplies (ζ,α)(\zeta, \alpha) by ζ−j\zeta^{-j}, which equals 11 only when nn divides jj. So only the identity of the Galois group fixes (ζ,α)(\zeta, \alpha), hence L=K((ζ,α))L = K((\zeta, \alpha)) is generated by an nn-th root of an element of KK.

Example: let K=ℚK = \Q, n=2n = 2, ζ=−1\zeta = -1, L=ℚ(2)L = \Q(\sqrt{2}) and σ(2)=−2\sigma(\sqrt{2}) = -\sqrt{2}. For α=2\alpha = \sqrt{2}, the resolvent is 2−σ(2)=22\sqrt{2} - \sigma(\sqrt{2}) = 2\sqrt{2}, and its square 88 lies in ℚ\Q.

Non-example: with ζ=1\zeta = 1 the same sum is α+σ(α)+⋯+σn−1(α)\alpha + \sigma(\alpha) + \cdots + \sigma^{n-1}(\alpha), the trace of α\alpha. This is not a Lagrange resolvent for n≥2n \ge 2, because 11 is not a primitive nn-th root of unity, and it lies in KK instead of generating LL.

Classically, for a polynomial with roots x1,…,xnx_1, \ldots, x_n, the Lagrange resolvent is the expression x1+ζx2+⋯+ζn−1xnx_1 + \zeta x_2 + \cdots + \zeta^{n-1} x_n.
