Lagrange resolvent

Summary

A Lagrange resolvent is a sum α+ζσ(α)+⋯+ζn−1σn−1(α)\alpha + \zeta \sigma(\alpha) + \cdots + \zeta^{n-1} \sigma^{n-1}(\alpha) built from an element α\alpha, an automorphism σ\sigma of order nn and an nn-th root of unity ζ\zeta. The automorphism σ\sigma multiplies it by ζ−1\zeta^{-1}, so its nn-th power is fixed by σ\sigma. This turns a cyclic extension into an extension obtained by adjoining an nn-th root, which is the key step in solving equations by radicals. Lagrange used such sums of the roots to explain the formulas for cubic and quartic equations.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)
