Definition

Let XX be a set. A filter on XX is a family ℱ\mathcal{F} of subsets of XX such that:

  1. X∈ℱX \in \mathcal{F}.
  2. ∅∉ℱ\emptyset \notin \mathcal{F}.
  3. If A∈ℱA \in \mathcal{F} and A⊆B⊆XA \subseteq B \subseteq X, then B∈ℱB \in \mathcal{F}.
  4. If A∈ℱA \in \mathcal{F} and B∈ℱB \in \mathcal{F}, then A∩B∈ℱA \cap B \in \mathcal{F}.

Remarks

Some authors, and Mathlib, drop clause 2. Then the only family that satisfies clauses 1, 3 and 4 and contains ∅\emptyset is the power set of XX. A filter in the sense above is then called a proper filter.

Example: for a point xx of a topological space XX, the neighbourhoods of xx form a filter 𝒩(x)\mathcal{N}(x), the neighbourhood filter of xx. Clause 2 holds because each neighbourhood contains xx, and clause 4 holds because the intersection of two neighbourhoods is a neighbourhood.

Example: on an infinite set XX, the sets with finite complement form a filter, the Fréchet filter. Clause 2 holds because XX is infinite, and clause 4 holds because the union of two finite sets is finite.

Example: for a∈Xa \in X, the family {A⊆X:a∈A}\set{A \subseteq X : a \in A} is a filter, the principal filter at aa.

Non-example: on ℕ\N, the family of sets that contain 00 or contain 11 satisfies clauses 1, 2 and 3. It fails clause 4: it contains {0}\set{0} and {1}\set{1}, but not {0}∩{1}=∅\set{0} \cap \set{1} = \emptyset.

A nonempty family ℬ\mathcal{B} of nonempty subsets of XX is a filter base if the intersection of any two members contains a member. The supersets of members of a filter base form a filter.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
