Final functor
Builds on FunctorComma categoryColimit
Definition
Let be a functor. For an object of , let be the comma category whose objects are pairs with an object of and . A morphism in it is a morphism with . is final if for every object of the category is nonempty and connected.
Remarks
Here a category is connected when any two objects are joined by a finite zigzag of morphisms. If is final, then for every functor the colimit of exists if and only if the colimit of exists. The canonical morphism is then an isomorphism. For small and this property for all is equivalent to finality.
Example: let have a terminal object , and let be the functor from the one-object category picking out . For each the category has one object, the unique arrow , and only its identity, so it is nonempty and connected. Hence for every .
Non-example: let be the poset and let pick out . There is no arrow , so is empty and is not final.
The inclusion of a cofinal subset of a directed set is a final functor.
