Definition

Let YY be a set, let II be a set, and for each i∈Ii \in I let XiX_i be a topological space and fi ⁣:Xi→Yf_i \colon X_i \to Y a map. The final topology on YY for the family (fi)i∈I(f_i)_{i \in I} is the set of all U⊆YU \subseteq Y with the following property. For every i∈Ii \in I, the preimage fi−1(U)f_i^{-1}(U) is open in XiX_i.

Remarks

This family of sets is a topology, because preimages commute with unions and intersections. It is the finest topology on YY for which every fif_i is continuous. Universal property: for a topological space ZZ, a map g ⁣:Y→Zg \colon Y \to Z is continuous for the final topology if and only if g∘fig \circ f_i is continuous for every ii.

Example: for a surjection q ⁣:X→Yq \colon X \to Y from a space XX, the final topology for qq is the quotient topology. Example: for the injections of the pieces into a disjoint union, the final topology is the disjoint union topology.

Non-example: let q ⁣:ℝ→ℝq \colon \R \to \R be the identity, with the usual topology on the source. The trivial topology {∅,ℝ}\set{\varnothing, \R} on the target makes qq continuous but is not the final topology. The set (0,1)(0, 1) has an open preimage, yet it is not open in the trivial topology.

The final topology is also called the strong topology or the coinduced topology for the family.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
