Definition
A morphism of schemes is finite if there is a cover of by open affine subschemes such that, for each :
- is an affine scheme ;
- , made into a -module by the ring map of , is a finitely generated module.
Remarks
If is finite, then clauses 1 and 2 hold for every open affine . A morphism is finite if and only if is a finite morphism of rings. A finite morphism is affine and of finite type. Example: for a field , the morphism given by , , is finite, since . Non-example: the open immersion satisfies clause 1 but not clause 2. If were a finite -module, then would be integral over . Since is an integrally closed domain, this would give , which is false.
