Commutative algebra Definition
Finite type algebra
Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be a commutative -algebra with structure map . The algebra is of finite type over , or finitely generated as an -algebra, if it has a finite generating set. That means there are such that every element of is for a polynomial with coefficients in . Equivalently, there is a surjective -algebra homomorphism from the polynomial ring onto for some .
Remarks
Example: is of finite type over a field . It is generated by and , and it is isomorphic to .
Non-example: is not of finite type over . Suppose , and let be the product of the denominators of the . Then every element of would have a power of as a denominator, which fails for with a prime not dividing .
A finite algebra is of finite type, but over shows that the converse fails. A finitely generated algebra over a Noetherian ring is Noetherian, by Hilbert's basis theorem.
