Definition

Let RR be a ring with identity and let PP be a left RR-module. The module PP is a finitely generated projective module if it is finitely generated and projective.

Remarks

The following are equivalent for a left RR-module PP:

  1. PP is finitely generated and projective.
  2. There are an integer n≥0n \ge 0 and a left RR-module QQ with P⊕Q≅RnP \oplus Q \cong R^n.
  3. P≅RneP \cong R^n e for some n≥0n \ge 0 and some idempotent matrix e∈Mn(R)e \in M_n(R), where RnR^n is the module of row vectors.

From 1 to 2: a surjection Rn→PR^n \to P splits because PP is projective. From 2 to 3: take ee to be the projection of RnR^n onto PP along QQ.

Example: let R=ℤ/6ℤR = \Z/6\Z and P=ℤ/2ℤP = \Z/2\Z, an RR-module through R→ℤ/2ℤR \to \Z/2\Z. By the Chinese remainder theorem R≅ℤ/2ℤ⊕ℤ/3ℤR \cong \Z/2\Z \oplus \Z/3\Z as RR-modules, so PP is a direct summand of R1R^1 and is finitely generated projective. It is not free, since it has 22 elements and a free RR-module of finite rank mm has 6m6^m elements.

Non-example: the module ℤ/2ℤ\Z/2\Z over R=ℤR = \Z is finitely generated but not projective. It is not a direct summand of any ℤn\Z^n, because ℤn\Z^n has no nonzero element of finite order. The free module R(ℕ)R^{(\N)} with a basis indexed by ℕ\N is projective but not finitely generated when R≠0R \neq 0.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
