Definition

Let GG be a finite group. The Fitting subgroup F(G)F(G) is the subgroup generated by all normal subgroups of GG that are nilpotent.

Remarks

Fitting's theorem says that if MM and NN are nilpotent normal subgroups of GG, then MNMN is a nilpotent normal subgroup. Hence F(G)F(G) is itself nilpotent and normal, and it contains every nilpotent normal subgroup of GG: it is the unique largest one. F(G)F(G) is a characteristic subgroup, and it is the product over the primes pp of the largest normal pp-subgroups Op(G)O_p(G). If GG is solvable, then the centraliser of F(G)F(G) in GG is contained in F(G)F(G).

Example: G=S4G = S_4. Its normal subgroups are {e}\set{e}, V={e,(1 2)(3 4),(1 3)(2 4),(1 4)(2 3)}V = \set{e, (1\,2)(3\,4), (1\,3)(2\,4), (1\,4)(2\,3)}, A4A_4 and S4S_4. The group VV is abelian, hence nilpotent, and it is the Klein four-group. The groups A4A_4 and S4S_4 are not nilpotent, because their centres are trivial. So F(S4)=VF(S_4) = V.

Non-example: A4A_4 is a normal subgroup of S4S_4 that is not nilpotent, so it is not contained in the generating family, and it is not F(S4)F(S_4).

If GG is a nonabelian simple group, then F(G)={e}F(G) = \set{e}. If GG is nilpotent, then F(G)=GF(G) = G.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
