Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be an -module. The module is flat if the following holds for every injective -linear map of -modules. The map is injective, where is the tensor product.
Remarks
Since is always right exact, is flat exactly when takes exact sequences to exact sequences. It is enough to check the condition for the inclusions of finitely generated ideals: is flat if and only if is injective for each such . Over a principal ideal domain, a module is flat exactly when it is torsion-free. Projective modules are flat, and a finitely presented flat module is projective.
Example: is a flat -module. For any -module , the module is the localization with , and localization preserves injective maps.
Non-example: is not a flat -module. The map , , is injective, but is multiplication by on , which is the zero map on a nonzero module.
