Flat morphism
Definition
Let be a morphism of schemes. For a point , let , and let be the induced map of stalks. These stalks are local rings, and makes a module over . The morphism is flat at if is a flat module over . The morphism is flat if it is flat at every point of .
Remarks
For a ring , the morphism is flat. Each local ring of is a localization of , which is a free -module, and localizations of flat modules are flat. For a field , the closed immersion given by is not flat. Its stalk map is , and is not flat over , since multiplication by is injective on but becomes zero on . For a morphism of affine schemes , flatness is equivalent to flatness of as an -module.
