Flexure of the lithosphere

Definition
Model the lithosphere as a thin elastic plate of thickness , Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio . The plate rests on a fluid mantle of density under gravity . The depression is filled by material of density . Let be a vertical load per unit area, depending on one horizontal coordinate . The flexure of the lithosphere is the downward deflection of the plate that satisfies and tends to far from the load. The number is the flexural rigidity.
Remarks
The equation is the Kirchhoff–Love plate equation in one dimension, or the Euler–Bernoulli beam equation with an elastic foundation, the buoyancy of the mantle acting as a restoring force. Let be the flexural parameter. Example: take a line load per unit length at . The solution is even in , and for it is Check: for it solves the equation with , and . The jump of across is . The deflection changes sign at , and the bulge is highest at , with height . Non-example: with the equation becomes , which is local isostasy, with no moat and no bulge.
