Floquet multiplier
Definition
Let and let be continuous and periodic of period . Consider the linear system on . Let be its fundamental matrix with . The monodromy matrix of the system is . A Floquet multiplier of the system is an eigenvalue of , counted with its algebraic multiplicity.
Remarks
A complex number is a Floquet multiplier if and only if the system has a nonzero solution with for all . Every multiplier is nonzero, and by Liouville's formula their product is . A number with is called a Floquet exponent. All solutions tend to if and only if every multiplier has absolute value less than .
Example: for a constant matrix , one has , so and the multipliers are for the eigenvalues of . For the scalar equation with , one has , and the only multiplier is .
Non-example: for , the coefficient is not periodic, so the definition does not apply; the ratio depends on .
For a -periodic orbit of an autonomous system , the multipliers of are those of the linear system . One of them is always , with the eigenvector .
