Force-free magnetic field

Summary

A force-free magnetic field is a magnetic field whose current density is everywhere parallel to the field. Then the magnetic part of the Lorentz force on the current, J×BJ \times B, vanishes. Such fields model the solar corona and other plasmas where the magnetic pressure dominates the gas pressure. They also appear as states of least magnetic energy at fixed magnetic helicity.
