Definition
Let be a locally compact abelian group with a Haar measure , and let be its Pontryagin dual. Let , the group algebra of -integrable functions. The Fourier transform of is the function given by
Remarks
Example: for with Lebesgue measure, the continuous characters are for , and the formula gives , the classical Fourier transform. For with normalised arc length and , it gives the Fourier coefficients of . Non-example: for on , the integral does not converge because ; the transform of such only makes sense as a distribution. The integral converges for because , and . The function is continuous on and vanishes at infinity, and for the convolution . Some authors use instead of ; this changes into .
