Definition

Let U⊆ℝnU \subseteq \R^n be open, let 1≤p<∞1 \le p < \infty, and let 0<σ<10 < \sigma < 1. The fractional Sobolev space Wσ,p(U)W^{\sigma,p}(U), or Sobolev–Slobodeckij space, is the set of u∈Lp(U)u \in L^p(U) with finite Gagliardo seminorm [u]σ,p,U=(∫U∫U∣u(x)−u(y)∣p∣x−y∣n+σp dx dy)1/p.[u]_{\sigma,p,U} = \Big( \int_U \int_U \frac{\abs{u(x) - u(y)}^p}{\abs{x - y}^{n + \sigma p}} \, dx \, dy \Big)^{1/p}. Here Lp(U)L^p(U) is the Lp space. It carries the norm ∥u∥Wσ,p(U)=(∥u∥Lp(U)p+[u]σ,p,Up)1/p\norm{u}_{W^{\sigma,p}(U)} = \big( \norm{u}_{L^p(U)}^p + [u]_{\sigma,p,U}^p \big)^{1/p}. Let s=k+σs = k + \sigma with k≥1k \ge 1 an integer and 0<σ<10 < \sigma < 1. The space Ws,p(U)W^{s,p}(U) is the set of uu in the Sobolev space Wk,p(U)W^{k,p}(U) with Dαu∈Wσ,p(U)D^\alpha u \in W^{\sigma,p}(U) whenever ∣α∣=k\abs{\alpha} = k.

Remarks

Each Ws,p(U)W^{s,p}(U) is a Banach space. On ℝn\R^n and for every real s≥0s \ge 0, one also defines Hs(ℝn)H^s(\R^n) as the set of u∈L2(ℝn)u \in L^2(\R^n) with (1+∣ξ∣2)s/2u^∈L2(ℝn)(1 + \abs{\xi}^2)^{s/2} \hat{u} \in L^2(\R^n), where u^\hat u is the Fourier transform. For 0<s0 < s not an integer, Ws,2(ℝn)=Hs(ℝn)W^{s,2}(\R^n) = H^s(\R^n) with equivalent norms; for 0<σ<10 < \sigma < 1 this follows from Plancherel's theorem, since [u]σ,2,ℝn2=c∫∣ξ∣2σ∣u^(ξ)∣2 dξ[u]_{\sigma,2,\R^n}^2 = c \int \abs{\xi}^{2\sigma} \abs{\hat u(\xi)}^2 \, d\xi for a constant c=c(n,σ)>0c = c(n, \sigma) > 0. For ss not an integer, Ws,p(ℝn)W^{s,p}(\R^n) is the Besov space Bp,ps(ℝn)B^s_{p,p}(\R^n). Negative orders are defined by duality, as spaces of tempered distributions or of distributions.

Example: on U=(−1,1)U = (-1, 1), let u=1u = 1 on (0,1)(0, 1) and u=0u = 0 on (−1,0)(-1, 0), and let 0<σ<1/20 < \sigma < 1/2. The double integral is 2∫01∫−10∣x−y∣−1−2σ dy dx2 \int_0^1 \int_{-1}^0 \abs{x - y}^{-1 - 2\sigma} \, dy \, dx, which is finite because ∫01∫01(a+b)−1−2σ da db<∞\int_0^1 \int_0^1 (a + b)^{-1 - 2\sigma} \, da \, db < \infty when 2σ<12\sigma < 1. So u∈Wσ,2(−1,1)u \in W^{\sigma,2}(-1, 1).

Non-example: the same uu is not in W1/2,2(−1,1)W^{1/2,2}(-1, 1). For σ=1/2\sigma = 1/2 the inner integral ∫−10(x−y)−2 dy\int_{-1}^{0} (x - y)^{-2} \, dy equals 1x−1x+1≥1x−1\frac{1}{x} - \frac{1}{x + 1} \ge \frac{1}{x} - 1, and ∫01(1x−1) dx=∞\int_0^1 (\frac{1}{x} - 1) \, dx = \infty.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
